Yoga mats come in different sizes, use different materials, and have different heights. So how should you choose your yoga mat? Follow these tips from FitSRI!

  1. Comfort rules. Are you a handstand junkie? Spend a lot of time in child pose? Or do you like the feel of cushion under your wrists and knees when you practice? If so, a Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE), or Polymer Environmental Resin (PER) might be up your alley. For the eco-conscious, natural rubber, cork, thick cotton or jute mats are also available from some producers.
  2. Thick or Thin? Some yogis like thin mats, some like mats that are a bit thicker. The choice is up to you! Most standard yoga mats have a standard depth of 1/8" of an inch (3.175mm), but many yoga mat producers make mats with thicknesses up to 8mm or 5/16th of an inch. Remember: the thicker the mat, the harder the transport so be sure to consider your carrying case when you make your purchase.
  3. Breathe In/Breathe Out: Depending on the material your mat is made of, the less (or more) density your mat will have. Choosing a mat that dries quickly and that dissipates heat during your practice is key.
  4. Harmful Chemicals? Choosing a mat made of synthetic materials often means you will need to let them breathe (off gas) prior to use. Be sure to check for harmful chemical off-gases when making a purchase as some chemicals used to treat mats for waterproofing or color durability may contain irritants that bother your skin. If you are sensitive to chemical additives, a mat made of natural materials might be best.
  5. The Weight Is Over: The thicker the mat, the heavier it will be. Additionally, some mats have two layers (one for design and the other for cushion) and these will be heavier than, say a plain cotton or jute mat. If shoulder pain is an issue for you, go with a lightweight material--your back will thank you!
  6. Durability: Of course, mats made with biodegradable materials (cotton, jute, cork) may degrade over time. Even mats made of synthetic materials will fade or lose their grippiness over time. Be mindful that yoga mats will degrade over time with use . Buying a backup mat might be in order for when your mat's comfort starts to fade.

My yoga mat of choice is the Chakra Aura Mat from Yoloha Yoga which is a USA based company located in Charleston, South Carolina. I love the chakra design, the grippiness of the mat, and it's absorbency. It serves me well during a sweaty, hot yoga sesh and comes with a carrying case (separate purchase). I don't get a commission, I just love the mat and the sustainable materials used throughout the manufacturing process. Plus, it's locally owned and I love that!
