About Me
My yoga journey began in 2002 when I took my first yoga class at the Ann Arbor School of Yoga in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My original teacher, Laurie Blakeney, was a student of Sri B.K.S. Iyengar, the father of Iyengar Yoga. It took a long time for me to decide to take a traditional yoga teacher training, but after graduate school I took the leap and earned my RYT-200 designation at Salt Yoga under the tutelage of Toni Thomas in East Lansing, Michigan.
What is Tapas? Tapas is a Sanskrit word meaning self-discipline, austerity, or burning enthusiasm. It is the third of the five niyamas discussed in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.Tapas for me represents my twenty-year yoga practice. I began my practice with a lot of skepticism and very little enthusiasm. But over time, I developed the discipline of coming back to my mat and my enthusiasm for what yoga has given me in terms of health and mental clarity made it (tapas) the natural choice of a name for my business!
My style of yoga focuses on alignment, building flexibility, gaining strength, and ensuring that students find their inner tapas whenever they come to the mat. I am a 200 hour RYT yoga teacher who currently lives in Memphis, Tennessee and have experience in teaching Ashtanga, Hot Vinyasa, and Rocket Yoga. I have taken courses from several renowned yoga instructors including Kino MacGregor, David Swenson, Manju Jois, Greg Tebb, and Bryan and Jonah Kest over the years and through these experiences I have learned techniques to improve and deepen my own practice and would love to share these teachings with you!
As a teacher, I believe in bringing the heat to your practice whether through vigorous movement or through pranayamic breathing techniques. Contact me today to find out more about how I can help you deepen your at home practice or introduce your workforce to the benefits of yoga for relaxation, health, and physical fitness. I am available for private bookings and corporate retreats and I am fully insured and registered with Yoga Alliance, the nation's leading nonprofit association representing the yoga community in the United States and worldwide.
On this website I offer zoom classes on demand or allow you to schedule a local (25 mile radius, please) in-home consultations to further develop your personal practice. I also teach at MindBody/Haus, Sana Yoga and continue my personal Ashtanga practice with DwiPada Yoga School.
